Kamran Karimov (1976) comes from the family of well-knownAzerbaijani traditional percussionists. He graduated from the Baku Musical College (1995), and the Baku Musical Academy (2001) as a percussionist and since 2008 has taught traditional percussion at the Azerbaijan National Conservatory.
Kamran Karimov is one of the key-figures among contemporary Azerbaijani traditional percussionists. He accompanies manyacclaimed Azerbaijani traditional singers and instrumentalists and has performed along with them at the most important world music festivals, such as WOMAD (UK, 2009, 2011), WOMEX (Greece, 2012), PROMS (UK, 2013), SWSX (USA, 2014), and lots of other international music events all over the world.
He accompanied to Gochag Askarov, a renowned Azerbaijani mugham singer who in 2009 won the First Prize of the “Sharq Taronalari” International World Music Festival and to Nazaket Teymurova, a prominent female mugham singer, People`s Artist of Azerbaijan who won the Prize of UNESCO in 2011 in Samarqand. Striking musical sense and intuition of Kamran Karimov, along with his sense of ensemble, makes him most desirable percussionist for any of Azerbaijani professional Mugham ensembles.
Kamran Karimov is also very popular as a soloist and author of many rhythmic compositions. Thus, one of his compositions, “Sirli an” (‘Magic instant’), was included in the album Rhythms of Azerbaijani Dances (Felmay Records, Turin, CD 8204, 2013) and was specially mentioned by Simon Broughton in his review to this disc (Songlines musical magazine, UK, 2013, # 96). Another of his compositions, ‘Heart and Hands’, has just come included in the album “Mugham Souls. Traditional Music of Modern Azerbaijan” (Felmay Records, Turin, 2017).
He accompanied to Sahib Pashazade, a renowned Azerbaijani Tar-player who in 2017 won the Qrand Prix of the 11th“Sharq Taronalari” International World Music Festival
